Dermapen Skin Needling | Dermapen Micro-Needling Treatment
Microneedling has become a popular way to rejuvenate the skin, offering superior, long-lasting results with minimal discomfort and downtime. Today, there are different options in microneedling techniques, from the popular Dermapen to a relatively new method of microneedling, which adds radiofrequency energy. Here are a few basic facts about the two procedures to help you determine which one is the right choice for you.
What is Microneedling?
Microneedling is a rejuvenation treatment that works by creating micro-injuries in the skin that trigger the body’s own healing response. Also known as collagen induction therapy, microneedling also stimulates the production of collagen and elastin to give skin a softer, more supple and youthful appearance. This procedure effectively reverses signs of aging and sun damage, while diminishing the appearance of visible imperfections like enlarged pores and shallow scarring.
DERMAPEN MICRONEEDLING
Dermapen Micro-Needling Treatment is a device that utilises multiple needles to vertically pierce the skin, more commonly known as skin needling. Skin needling causes a controlled wound within the skin to encourage its own natural repairing process. The result is an increased production of collagen fibres and healthier-looking skin. Dermapen can be used to treat the appearance of fine lines, pigmentation, vertical lip lines, enlarged/open pores, stretch marks, acne scars and surgical scars.
The Dermapen microneedling pen uses sterile, individually-sealed, disposable needle cartridges for optimal patient safety and comfort. Every Dermapen needle tip is actually made up of 12 smaller needles, which use proprietary technology to penetrate vertically into the skin. This creates small, micro-skin channels, while stimulating the skin’s natural ability to heal itself and increasing the production of new collagen — which is the formation of strong, insoluble fibers that serve as connective tissue between cells.
These micro-skin channels carry up to 80% more topical nutrients, allowing penetration deep into the dermis fibroblasts, feeding the cells found in the dermis and basal layers. This increases the absorption of active ingredients into the skin, stimulating repair at a cellular level and accelerating the regeneration of the skin’s epidermal cells.
This treatment is similar to laser treatments, but without the severe side effects or the long recovery time. Adding to that benefit, studies have shown that Dermapen treatments are more effective than traditional microdermabrasion and chemical peels, due to how the disposable needles reduce the risk of cross-contamination. The adjustable needle depth also allows treatment that adapts to individual client’s needs.
The Dermapen is a minimally invasive microneedling pen that provides an excellent technique for targeting specific skin concerns. Problem areas such as surgery scars, acne scars, stretch marks are more are visibly reduced after just one treatment. The Dermapen treatment can also help to enhance the overall health of your skin as well as improve the development of new layers of skin. Microneedling with the Dermapen
Traditional microneedling has been performed for many years, both by professionals and through DIY tools you can use at home. The procedure reached a new level with the introduction of the Dermapen, a small device that delivers a dozen small needles into the skin with minimal discomfort. The pen moves smoothly over the skin to cover an entire treatment area in a fraction of the time of other microneedling devices.
Topical serums can be applied to the skin prior to microneedling to further enhance the results of the procedure. Hyaluronic acid, peptides and other cosmeceuticals can penetrate more deeply into the dermal layers, where they can have a greater effect. Platelet rich plasma (PRP), a serum created from a patient own blood, is a concentrated formulation of blood platelets. Platelets are one of the bodies largest repositories of growth factors. Growth factors promote healing, stimulate cell turnover and assist in tissue repair. PRP has been used for years by oral surgeons to promote bone healing and by orthopedic surgeons to promote bone, joint and tendon healing. PRP has recently been shown to promote skin rejuvenation especially when injected into the deep layers of the skin and when delivered more superficially into the skin with microneedling.
HOW DOES DERMAPEN WORK?
The Dermapen causes painless micro-injuries in the top layer of the skin to help encourage an increased production of collagen and elastin. These components are the key proteins that the skin needs in order to prevent the visible signs of ageing. Following a Dermapen treatment, your skin’s appearance will be brighter, fresher and dull, tired looking skin will be dramatically reduced.
Microneedling has long been scientifically proven as an effective way to treat skin problem areas like scarring, stretch marks and wrinkles. Dermapen is a microneedling pen that works to rejuvenate and enhance the skin’s natural appearance.
Dermapen uses sterile, individually-sealed needle cartridges that are disposable to ensure the highest levels of safety and comfort for our clients. The tip of the Dermapen needle is made up of 12 smaller needles which are used to penetrate the skin vertically creating micro-skin channels that help to stimulate the skin’s natural ability to heal itself through increasing the production of collagen and elastin.
Dermapen is a minimally invasive form of microneedling which is just as effective as other ablative skin treatments such as Fraxel, IPL, Laser Resurfacing and Chemical Peels.

DERMAPEN – MICRONEEDLING IN A DIFFERENT WAY
MICRONEEDLING Dermapen allows a deeper penetration into the skin’s dermis fibroblasts, which help to increase collagen and elastin production deep inside this layer of skin. MICRONEEDLING Dermapen treatment allows a greater level of absorption of active ingredients to be reached into the skin to help speed up the regeneration of the epidermal skin cells and improve the appearance of scars, stretch marks and wrinkles.
There is a much faster recovery time following a Dermapen treatment compared to similar ablative treatments and disposable needles reduce the risk of cross-contamination. The Dermapen needle can also be adjusted to different needle depths so it allows us to tailor the treatment to our clients individually.
What will the treatment involve?
The standard Dermapen Micro-Needling treatment includes a double cleanse, LED light therapy, numbing cream application (if needed), Uber peel and, cooling mask and finishing products.
How should I prepare my skin for a Dermapen treatment?
During your pre-treatment consult one of our Dermal Therapists will asses your skin and recommend products to use two weeks prior to your Dermapen treatment. For optimal results we encourage the use of active ingredients such as Vitamin A, Vitamin C and AHA exfoliants like Lactic Acid. This allows the skin to strengthen (especially in delicate areas), speed up the healing process and reduces the likeliness of complications.
Is the treatment uncomfortable?
Depending on the depth of the needles utilised, discomfort during skin needling can vary. Generally, topical anaesthetic cream is applied to the skin 20 minutes before treatment, however, topical numbing is discouraged as it acts as a vasoconstrictor. Vasoconstriction slows down the natural inflammatory response that is beneficial for new collagen fibres.
Is there any downtime?
Downtime varies between individuals, but generally the skin can remain pink and a bit sensitive for 1 – 2 days post treatment. We recommend to avoid sun exposure, intense activities and to interrupt the use of active ingredients for 2 – 4 days post skin needling.
How many treatments are recommended?
As a general rule, 4-6 treatments are recommended for skin rejuvenation with a minimum of 4 weeks between treatments. For acne scarring and stretch marks, 6 or more treatments are recommended.
What kind of result can I expect?
The skin is rejuvenated and can be noticeable even after one treatment (think of when a wound heals, new tissue is visible). As collagen production is a lengthy process, full results can be seen up to six month after a treatment.
